I've got a Varsity Town tailcoat and trousers sold by Kaufman's of Pittsburgh, pre-1960. A really nice piece of work, though the thick cloth and huge lapels make it a period piece. It serves me well at the occasional formal dance.
I have a Varsity-Town (labeled with a dash in the name) sport coat inherited from my father which is from Coles Men's Wear of Battle Creek. It is probably early- mid 50s, as he left Battle Creek in 1956. It is also heavy, with a herringbone-like pattern. The lapels are not so large as to look out of place today. Well tailored and nicely lined.
From the halcyon days when young men wanted to look mature.
